DISRUPTION is Lara Sarkissian’s debut EP release via CLUB CHAI. The project is an electronic soundtrack to an imagined fictional film inspired from stories of Armenian mythology, the transition from the worship of nature to the roles of gods and goddesses and tying these narratives to encounters with familial spirits. The soundtrack uses electronic composition, instruments with roots in the Armenian Highlands, sounds shaped from plateaued landscapes and geography, samples from old cartoons, and distorted narrations of rituals.
Lara Sarkissian is a composer, DJ (FOOZOOL) and filmmaker. She is co-founder of CLUB CHAI in the Bay Area alongside artist 8ULENTINA; a record label, event series, and curatorial project that artistically hybridizes non-western sounds with electronic music. Lara Sarkissian’s electronic music weaves in experimental sound design, approaches, storytelling and has roots to her visual work. She scores for films and audiovisual installations.
In Spring 2018, she joined the Institute for Sound and Music in Berlin and ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany as an artist in residence. Sarkissian worked with spatial audio software in producing a 360 degree immersive sound and visual installation piece in collaboration with video artist Jemma Woolmore for the ISM Hexadome exhibition. The installation piece will be exhibiting at museums in Europe and North America until 2019.
In 2017, Sarkissian made her live set international debut at Moscow Museum of Modern Art’s 'Hosting the Inhuman' exhibition, performing a live-score to her short film IR HOKIN HANGEEST. In 2018, she produced a 360 sound piece and live show for San Francisco's spatial software and immersive audio space Envelop.
